Getting Ready for Fall: While The Summer Heat Is Here! ☀️🍂

It may still feel like the middle of summer outside, but at Bunny’s Love Farm, we’re already thinking about fall!

The hot days of summer can make it hard to imagine cool mornings, leafy greens, and fall harvests, but farming requires us to always think a season ahead. While we’re caring for our summer crops, we’re also preparing the soil, planning our fall garden, and getting ready for the vegetables that thrive when temperatures begin to cool.

☀️ Farming Through the Summer Heat

Summer heat can be challenging for both plants and farmers.

During periods of high temperatures, plants can lose moisture quickly. That means we have to pay close attention to watering, soil moisture, weeds, pests, and signs of heat stress.

Mulching around plants can help conserve soil moisture and keep the soil cooler. Watering at the right time—generally early in the day—also helps plants make better use of the water before the hottest part of the afternoon.

And just like our plants, farmers have to be careful in the heat too. Staying hydrated, taking breaks, and avoiding the most intense part of the day are important when working outside.

🍂 Why Prepare for Fall While It’s Still Hot?

A successful fall garden doesn’t begin when the first cool day arrives.

Many fall vegetables need to be planted or started weeks before cooler weather arrives. That means planning begins while summer crops are still producing.

Preparing early gives us time to:

  • Decide what we want to grow

  • Start seeds for fall transplants

  • Clear finished summer crops

  • Add compost and organic matter to growing areas

  • Prepare raised beds and planting spaces

  • Check irrigation and watering systems

  • Plan where each fall crop will grow

It’s one of the interesting things about farming: we may be harvesting one season while preparing for the next.

🥬 What’s Coming for Fall?

Cooler temperatures open the door for some of our favorite vegetables.

Our fall growing season can include crops such as:

  • Collard greens

  • Kale

  • Mustard greens

  • Turnips

  • Lettuce

  • Spinach

  • Broccoli

  • Cabbage

  • Cauliflower

These crops generally prefer cooler growing conditions than many of our summer favorites.

And there’s something special about seeing a garden filled with beautiful leafy greens when the temperatures finally begin to drop!

🌱 Preparing the Soil for Another Season

Healthy plants begin with healthy soil.

As summer crops finish, it’s a good time to evaluate our growing areas. Removing old plant material, managing weeds, adding compost or other appropriate soil amendments, and preparing beds can give fall crops a better place to establish their roots.

Crop rotation is also important. Whenever possible, changing which plant families grow in a particular area can help with long-term soil and pest management.

The goal isn’t simply to plant another crop—it’s to continue building a productive growing system season after season.

From Summer Harvests to Fall Greens 🌽➡️🥬

One of the things we love most about farming is watching the seasons change.

Right now, summer crops are still reminding us that the heat isn’t finished yet. But before long, we’ll begin seeing more trays of seedlings, freshly prepared beds, and rows of cool-season vegetables.

That’s the rhythm of the farm.

Harvest. Prepare. Plant. Grow. Repeat.

At Bunny’s Love Farm, we’re looking forward to another season of growing fresh food for our community.

So while the summer sun is still shining, we’re already getting ready for what’s next.

Fall is coming—and we’re getting ready to grow! 🍂🥬🌱
